The name Lepios is derived from Asklepios,
the god of healing in Greek mythology. Asklepios was said to
have discovered medicine by observing a snake bringing another
snake back to life with herbs.
The Sanctuary of Asklepios at
Epidaurus, built around the 3rd century B.C, was one of the most
celebrated healing centers of the ancient world. Hippocrates,
the greatest physician of the antiquity, taught his medical students
there.
To this day, the universal symbol
of medicine depicts the staff of Asklepios: a single snake entwined
around a branch. |
